Posted at: 12/24/2011 10:14 AM

The Windham County Sheriff's Department deployed it's Aggressive Driving Task Force last night, December 23rd, 2011, to encourage safe driving for the holiday season. Sheriff Keith Clark and eight of his deputies were stationed in towns throughout Windham County to help ensure motorists followed the law while they traveled to their destinations. Forty-four tickets were issued for a variety of aggressive and/or dangerous driving violations.

In a study performed by the State of Vermont from 2005 to 2009, Windham County's highways maintained the highest average motor vehicle fatality rate in the State; it ranked between the highest and second highest for each individual year. Additionally, Windham County had the second highest fatality rate average due to speed-related crashes and the second highest fatality rate average for alcohol impaired drivers.

Aggressive/dangerous driving behaviors, to name a few, include traveling in excess of the posted speed limits, failing to stop at stop signs, failure to properly wear a seat belt, texting while driving, following another vehicle too closely and failing to maintain the lane of traffic.

The Windham County Sheriff's Department's Aggressive Driving Task Force will be out throughout the remainder of the month and into the new year.

Finally, as part of the nationwide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, the department's DUI Task Force will be deployed to apprehend impaired drivers throughout this month and into the new year.

From all the members of the Windham County Sheriff's Department, we wish everyone a Happy Holiday season.
