Sheriff
Robinson was born in Burlington, Vermont in 1912
he joined the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles
 as
an Inspector and was assigned to Brattleboro Vermont
in 1935. He met and married the former Evelyn
Prouty in November of 1936 and after their son
Larry was born in 1940 Sheriff Robinson entered
the military. He was assigned to the Pacific theater
during World War II, and served as a Lieutenant
in the US Army.
Upon completion of his military
service he returned to Vermont and elected not
to resume his position with the Motor Vehicle
Department. He became an Inn Keeper at the Hill
Home Inn of Brattleboro, VT and along with his
wife ran a tourist home on Western Ave. He also
sold cars for Elmer Bemis.
In 1951, he ran for the office
of Sheriff of Windham County after his long time
friend, Patrick O’Keefe, passed away leaving
the office vacant. There were 8 contenders in
the Republican primary that year they included
Eric H. Delling Jr., C.B. Graham, Erwin Ignaszewski,
Stanley Nowicki, Edward C. Pickering, William
Wheelock, Arthur P. Wright and Sheriff Robinson,
who won the election and took office in 1952.
Sheriff Robinson’s office
was located in the corner of the County Clerk’s
office at the municipal center in Brattleboro.
He served as Court Officer for Municipal Court,
transported prisoners and served civil process.
When he became Sheriff, the County Jail in Newfane
had a hotel attached to it; the jail and hotel
had been run for many years by Mable Whitney.
In 1955
-56 the Assistant Judges, decided that due to
the poor condition of the hotel, it should be
torn down and the Sheriffs living quarters as
the Windham County Jail in Newfane, where he and
his wife, Evelyn, became the jail keepers for
the County Jail. He served the County as Sheriff
until 1969 and then was appointed County Clerk
after the death of his friend , George Daley who
had been the Clerk for 30 years.
Sheriff Robinson was succeeded
by William Graham by appointment of the Governor.
